What is a Non-profit?

Nonprofits focus on the growth of the communities and it is mission-driven. They serve communities, address community problems, and build community assets in diverse ways.  The mission drives both the action and the management of the nonprofit. Whatever revenue nonprofit organizations receive, it is geared towards helping the communities and their staff, making sure their mission statement is being met as well. Nonprofit is not a sector that raise fund for individual gain. Whatever funds nonprofit organizations raise, it is used directly for the purpose of the organization

Some characteristics of nonprofit are the value of mission statement. Nonprofits are delegated to living by their mission statement. Another characteristic is advocacy. Nonprofits advocate in several ways. It could be for infants, men, women, children, rights, food, and so on. The work that is put into advocating shows that nonprofit organizations look out for the communities.  Empathy is another characteristic in nonprofits. They feel and understand the burden of others. Lastly, a good board of trustees add to the characteristics of nonprofits. When the board of trustee is diverse in skills and is willing to share their business knowledge and financial support, it helps to improve the company greatly and has positive impact on the organization.

The article said that "on an organizational level, many nonprofits lack the infrastructural tools (professional development, leadership training, and so on) to retain their employees." My question is, why many organizations lack infrastructural tool when there are many conferences available for development?
I am a little shock to know many nonprofits are struggling in these areas. I thought there were few nonprofits, maybe smaller organizations or organizations that are just sprouting.

  1. Thanks for your post Angie. I think this is a great question about why these organizations lack the infrastructure to retain employees. I have a few ideas, but this might be a great question to put to some of our visitors too!

G U E S T S P E A K E R R E F L E C T I O N

My reflection is based on Karisa Tashjian, from the Providence Public Library. Karisa's presentation spoke out the most from my point of view. The way in which she presented her materials and educated the class not just what we know about libraries, but what goes on in the organizational structure that most of the class did not know about. I like how she made a connection to the fish after talking about partnering with other organizations. She mentioned that, partnering with others help bring in bigger ideas especially when everyone is leading in the same direction. The activity with the fish when everyone has to write down the names of fish they know helped me in understanding what she meant by working alone only lead to walking in circle whereas working with others. When there is a team opportunity and everyone is on the same page and has the same goal, there will be one focus and a better result. In connection to one of our course text, this reminds me about the import...

Play Box Activity (Culture & Ethnicity)

I believe culture and ethnicity cannot be learned once, because there is always something to learn even from our own cultures and/or ethnicity. I loved the activity because my teammate Maggie had me thinking more about my culture and what it means to me. It is something I do not often think about. By doing this play box, it helped me to cherish my culture even more. Planning this activity with Maggie was very educating and fun. The best part was listening to what others have to say concerning their culture/ethnicity. It made me to feel as if I am in a room fill with rainbow. Although we all have different cultures, but we somehow relate to at least one or two persons in the room. As for me, I felt satisfying when Tracy spoke of culture and the love she has for certain music and food in her country because I could relate and understand what she was speaking of. For the other, though i did not know, it made me curious to find out and I felt that I was with them in that moment when the...
