Who We Are
We're a non-profit organization with one goal: building student power so that young people can improve their education and well-being.

My version of Providence Student Union (PSU) mission state: The mission statement of Providence Student Union is to build student power that will enable the young people to effectively improve their well-being and education.

It seems that (PSU) mission statement serves as both the mission and vision statement. It is difficult to know what the mission statement is when browsing their website. I had to ask what exactly the mission statement is. The mission statement can easily be explained by others. It is short and simple.

However, there are two critiques I have concerning the mission statement. It is difficult to locate and/or figure out and it doesn't say how they are building student power to enable the young people to improve their education and well-being.

G U E S T S P E A K E R R E F L E C T I O N

My reflection is based on Karisa Tashjian, from the Providence Public Library. Karisa's presentation spoke out the most from my point of view. The way in which she presented her materials and educated the class not just what we know about libraries, but what goes on in the organizational structure that most of the class did not know about. I like how she made a connection to the fish after talking about partnering with other organizations. She mentioned that, partnering with others help bring in bigger ideas especially when everyone is leading in the same direction. The activity with the fish when everyone has to write down the names of fish they know helped me in understanding what she meant by working alone only lead to walking in circle whereas working with others. When there is a team opportunity and everyone is on the same page and has the same goal, there will be one focus and a better result. Black Lives Matter

Black Lives Matter is a sensitive topic to me personally because each person embraces it differently. I feel when explaining Black Lives Matter (BLM) to anyone, the individual should be conscious about what is being said and how it is explained. If I am to explain what is BLM to a young person, I will explain depending on what the individual wants to hear baring in mind that I do not know how this person will embrace my information. I would simple say that it is an activist movement, rally, and an organization that is seeking racial justice. It is a movement that started after the murder of an African-American teen Trayvon Martin. The protests speak out against police killings of black people, racial profiling, police brutality, and racial inequality in the United States criminal justice system.
